If I were a betting woman (wink, wink), I'd feel pretty comfortable with a wager that says you're gonna scroll back through these pics at least one more time. Yep! I know we will.
Speaking of betting... bet you thought this post couldn't get any better. Wrong! Sydney told us all about the proposal:"So, first I should tell you that we met on a blind date. Our friends were gracious enough to pick wisely for us! 11 months later (to the day) Ryan surprised me with a trip to San Francisco, CA and life has been a whirlwind ever sense! On August 21st I was at work completely oblivious to what was about to happen. Around 11am Ryan sent me flowers with a card that read "Call me when you get off at 5:00". I thought, that's sweet, but didn't take it much further. A few hours later I get an email saying "Check in for your 9am flight to San Francisco". My heart immediately began to race. I sent a screen shot of the email to Ryan with 1 question: "Do you have something to tell me?". Over the next few minutes, that felt like an eternity, I waited for his response and started to put the clues together. I just KNEW he was going to propose.
My boss turned into a complete weirdo and denied knowing anything. My mom also denied having any part in this scheme. My friends were clueless. Finally, Ryan calls me back. "We are just taking a fun long-weekend trip before the summer is over. Don't worry, I've made arrangements for you to be off work so everything is fine." We hang up the phone and my mind is going nuts-- is he going to propose? am I over thinking it? why didn't he tell my parents?-- at this point I'm a crazy person.
About 30 minutes later I get a text message from Ryan. He, at length, explains that this is just a fun trip. He will not be proposing to me so I should not get my hopes up. If anyone asks, the answer is no.
Que me being completely bummed out. I didn't text him back.
5:00 comes and I'm a hot mess: will he propose? will he not? I'm kicking myself for the messy bun on top of my head and my lack of attention to the day's outfit. I get to his place and he tells me we are going to get my nails done. MY NAILS... THAT ARE ON MY RING-WEARING FINGERS. So I just know it's coming. But then I wonder if I'm being crazy--he knows I like to get my nails done before vacations (who doesn't?) so maybe that's all there is to it.
The next morning we load the Jeep and head to the airport. I am SO excited and nervous and trying not to over think every word that comes out of his mouth. We get to Denver and discover that we have a 3 hour flight delay. Of course. Shortly after we make it to our hotel in sunny San Francisco. We open the curtains and from a distance can see The Bay. Immediately I said I wanted to go to the water! He said "I have actually made plans to go out on a boat so wear something warm". (Insert public service announcement: It's windy near the bay, if you ever plan to go be sure you dress in layers!). Then, as we are getting ready, he starts to rush me. "We've really got to go, we have reservations and we're late" (because of the flight delay). Now this is a man that NEVER rushes me. Quite honestly it's usually the other way around. So we finally make it out of the door and he's fumbling around, forgetting stuff, we have to back track and it took forever to get to the car.
On the way to this boat Captain John calls to inform us that the whole group of people on the boat are waiting on us. I start to believe him--we really are late. Finally, we park the car, walk to the dock, and there I see Captain John waiting on us, with no one else on his boat. Hm, why would Ryan lie? Then it hits me--this is a private tour!
Over the next hour we sail at sunset through the bay, along side the wind surfers and sail boats, all the way to the Golden Gate Bridge. (Remember the wind? Yes, I'm freezing at this point). We decide to go UNDER the bridge- because who gets to do that??- then we will head back. About the time we make it under the bridge and have taken gobs of pictures I notice Captain John is stalling and Ryan is being really sweet.
The next thing I know, Ryan is on 1 knee, holding the most beautiful ring I've ever seen and my life changed. It happened! Ryan OFFICIALLY wants to marry me and I get to be his forever! Yay!
Now, I'm ready to go to dinner and celebrate with my man! I texted my parents and friends who all confess to being in on the master plan and everyone is overjoyed that he pulled it off (no one more than me of course). Next we go back to the hotel to get ready for dinner and again this man is rushing me. The oddest thing.
We get to the restaurant, park the car, walk through the door and Ryan takes my hand and starts zooming through the restaurant. Keep in mind I'm wearing 5in wedges and can't move that fast! I start to gripe..."Ryan, you can't just walk in. You have to tell the hostess we're here." About that time we turn the corner and there I see my mom, dad, and best friend Caroline. Oh my gosh! I cried for a good 5 minutes. This man has thought of everything! He flew my parents in and Caroline road tripped from LA. That was truly the best day of my life.
We spend the next 3 days sight seeing. We hit our favorite winery in Napa Valley, saw the giant trees in the Muir Woods, and soaked up every minute of the celebration of our engagement. (Can I go back and do it again??)"
:)))) That's a wrap, y'all. Hope you love this post as much as we do!Sydney West Selman and Joseph Ryan Smith plan to exchange vows June 14, 2014. We promise to do our best to get their wedding pics for y'all! Best wishes to Sydney and Ryan from TWP!
